Fall River Painted Ladies

Victorian Homes and City Buildings

Lizzie Borden’s Maplecroft

Perhaps the most famous house on The Hill is located on French Street-the home bought by Lizzie and Emma Borden after Lizzie’s acquittal in 1893.  The ladies moved from their Second Street 1845 Greek Revival house at the beginning of September, 1893.  Lizzie lived there until her death in June 1927, but her sister Emma vacated the property for reasons unknown in 1905.  No other house has caused such interest and intrigue, due to its famous occupant. The Queen Anne structure was painted in a two-tone scheme when the Borden sisters acquired it, a buff beige and a verdi-gris theme was then covered in a slate-grey paint tone.  It may be the only house in Fall River with a name- MAPLECROFT was emblazoned on the front steps- an act which raised plenty of eyebrows in Old Fall River!
